Obverse:

A seated figure, probably of France, facing left. In her right hand she holds a long pole, topped by a liberty cap. At the top the sun, its rays radiating upon the hat and France. Her left elbow rests on a plaque upon which is inscribed: DROITE DE L'HOMME ARTIC V. Behind her a cock, perched on a half pedestal, stands on one leg.

Vern's Comments:

The Monneron brothers had these tokens, along with the more commonly seen 5 sous pieces, manufactured in England to provide small change for their customers' use. They exhibit amazing beauty for pieces that were essentially necessity money.

This is a much better copy than the other on the site and I was able to make out the edge lettering.

Article V of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen

LIBERTE SOUS LA LOI. La Liberté, assise à gauche, tenant la pique surmontée du bonnet. Elle est appuyée sur la table de la déclaration des Droits de l'homme; on y lit: DROITS DE LHOMME ARTIC. V. (Article cinq). Derrière, on voit une colonne sur laquelle est le coq. Au-dessus, le soleil rayonnant. Exergue: L'AN III DE LA LIBERTE.

Il y a deux variétés de cette pièce qui présentent entre elles le légères différences. Dans celle-ci, au revers, après les mots: ASSIGNATS DE 50^L, il n'y a pas de point. L'autre est décrite au numéro suivant.
